چکیده

Data envelopment analysis (DEA), originally developed to study production efficiency ofmicro-level organizations, has recently been used to adopt a production-frontier approach to the analysis of international macroeconomic growth and convergence patterns. DEA methods, however, are known to provide biased estimates of the production frontier and efficiency. We employ recent results from the statistics/econometrics literature (and more recent, more extensive, and more accurate data than previously employed) to construct the unbiased convex production frontier and then use this construction to decompose productivity growth into components attributable to technological change (shift of the production frontier), efficiency change (movements toward or away from the frontier), physical capital deepening, and human capital accumulation. Using this decomposition, we analyze the evolution of the world productivity distribution, especially the shift from uni-modality to bimodality over the 1965–2000 period.

Application of Malmquist Index in Two-Stage DEA for Measurement of Productivity Growth

The purpose of this paper is to develop an output oriented methodology for calculating productivity growth by using Malmquist productivity index (MPI) and two different data envelopment analysis (DEA) views (optimistic and pessimistic) simultaneously, and apply it to five Iranian Commercial Banks over the four time period (2009-2013). Consequently, we have proposed a new approach called the dou...

A Better Technology Frontier: Estimating Aggregate Production Frontiers with Sector Data

Researchers of regional and international productivity comparisons are increasingly adopting various frontier approaches to examine convergence and the possible causes of productivity differences. We argue that economy-wide technology frontiers estimated with aggregate measures of output are downward biased. This bias extends not only to estimates of the technology frontier, but also produces i...

Investigating Agricultural Productivity Growth and Convergence in Iran and Eastern African Countries

The issue of convergence or divergence of productivity has important policy for regional poverty reduction and increasing standards of living. If productivity converges to a common level without intervention, there is little need for explicit policies in lagging regions to promote catch up. On the other hand, productivity has divergence trend, then explicit policies would be needed to prevent f...

Estimating the Density of a Conditional Expectation

In this paper, we analyze methods for estimating the density of a conditional expectation. We compare an estimator based on a straightforward application of kernel density estimation to a bias-corrected estimator that we propose. We prove convergence results for these estimators and show that the bias-corrected estimator has a superior rate of convergence. In a simulated test case, we show that...
